ABSTRACT

With greater emphasis placed on wellness, stress can be characterized as unhealthy or counterproductive to a healthy work environment and is often portrayed as an impediment to wellness. Organizational members can feel like they have to choose between the stress of productivity and performance or the prioritization of their wellbeing. This chapter challenges the concept of stress reduction, by reframing stress as a function of importance, which is essential to wellness. When values-centered engagement and effective stress management are prioritized, an organization elevates to a healthy level of resilience. Using the chapter vignette as a case example, the 5-step process outlined in Chapter 1 focuses on stress management strategies that enable team members to embrace stressful, values-centered behavior while holding that stress in a healthy manner.
