ABSTRACT

Most of the data relating to migration and climate change focus on what might happen in the future, based on projections, rather than how climate change is affecting migration patterns now. Little political priority is often given to collecting timely reliable data on migration. Few countries have an explicit migration data strategy or road map, which spells out how they plan to improve the collection, analysis, sharing and use of migration statistics. International Data Alliance for Children is a cross-sectoral global coalition comprised of governments, international and regional organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), think tanks, academics and civil society. While the preparation of migration profiles was conceived to be the start of an ongoing inter-ministerial process of cooperation, in practice only a minority of countries have updated their migration profile on a regular basis, often due to a lack of resources. A new global migration data capacity-building programme needs to provide assistance at different levels—local, national, regional and global.
