ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses key common challenges to effectively collecting, managing and analysing migration data and aims to answer the following questions: How are migration data usually collected and managed? What are common sources of migration data? The chapter presents common methodological issues, including uneven adherence to official statistical definitions and high levels of data fragmentation, several practical challenges, such as poor coordination across government, and key considerations related to ethics and data protection. Finally, the chapter discusses how capacity development initiatives to strengthen migration data could be improved, exploring common approaches and statistical capacity efforts. It also discusses some of the main challenges around capacity development and ways to address these, and ends with comments on the capacity development landscape moving forward. Throughout the chapter, examples are given of innovative and creative capacity development approaches and activities.
