ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a historical focus concerning how we came to learn about the structure and function of the brain. One important aspect of this is that our brain helps to create our experience of the world and predict what will happen next. The chapter then takes a larger perspective and explores evolution and the evolution of the brain. Darwin suggested two mechanisms that influence which physical characteristics are passed on to the next generation. These are natural selection and sexual selection. Finally, the development of the brain in humans is examined.
