ABSTRACT

In order to understand the anatomy of criminalisation, it is essential to see how the phenomenon evolved. This chapter follows the development and evolution of the Master Under God, a term which historically defined their responsibility and, in fact, is still relevant today. That responsibility has been moulded by the business risk and the development of the law, and its impact on the evolution of the Master’s position in the light of these factors, arriving at a clear understanding of the relationship between the Master and the owner, which has proved to be an important factor in criminalisation.
