ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 explores how movements are remembered once their active phases are over. Memorial texts—speeches, movies, and memorials are given specific attention in this chapter—serve both to communicate and potentially constrain a movement’s ideology and memory. But should these memorial texts be considered movement texts themselves? If these texts continue to evoke the values and goals of earlier movements, do they allow these movements to continue into the present? This chapter examines how memorial texts might allow for this sort of ongoing social movement activity, while also limiting or transforming it in important ways.
