ABSTRACT

After her doctoral dissertation was accepted and she was awarded a DSc in 1931, Janaki travelled to England to spend a few months at the John Innes Horticultural Institution in England, training under the maverick English cytogeneticist, Cyril Dean Darlington, who was six years her junior. This chapter provides a short history of the institution, beginning with William Bateson, through to J. B. S. Haldane, W. C. F. Newton and Darlington; the John Innes was also recognised by the University of London as a place of research for students seeking to qualify for a higher degree. Janaki’s stint at the John Innes, where she made new friends, especially Darlington, and learnt much both about cytogenetics, would make a huge impact on her both intellectually and otherwise. It was only with much hesitation that she would proceed to India late that year.
