ABSTRACT

Major findings of this study are summarised here in a structured form. For five major industries, it groups together growth patterns in 1914–46 and their employment opportunities. Findings on employment creations in 1914–46 enable us to participate in the debate on India’s deindustrialisation in the colonial period. The industrial consequences of the world wars and the effects of the Great Depression on different industries are then summarised. In view of topical interests, the changes of ownership pattern in the inter-war period are discussed in a separate section. The findings on the hypothesis of low productivity of Indian labour and the industries’ productivity analysis (especially returns to scale, technical progress and total factor productivity (TFP)) are also summarised.
