ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ‘archaeological’ methodology of problem analysis, the research materials collected for the study, and the coding and analysis strategy pursued in the book. The social studies of finance offer rich inspiration for the present study due to its attention to socio-technical controversies, its attention to interplay between economic theories and financial market infrastructures, and its breakdown of the market-society divide. However, this chapter also argues that problem analysis methodology – drawing on ‘archaeological’ modes of comparison and inference – can push analysis further in the treatment of recurring patterns of controversy around financial market infrastructures. The appropriate methods of collecting interviews and documents and of coding and analysis are discussed.
