ABSTRACT

219Russia’s global influence is greater than its share of GDP and population would suggest. Domestically, the ‘Crimea effect’ on regime popularity has faded. The proportion of people who think Russia is on the wrong path has doubled since 2015. Putin’s popularity hovers close to historic lows. Demography favours Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan; the former has made notable progress in human development. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003267447/178637b7-cfe7-41aa-ab82-0d6bd0169adc/content/figpg219_1.tif"/> https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003267447/178637b7-cfe7-41aa-ab82-0d6bd0169adc/content/figpg219_2.tif"/> https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003267447/178637b7-cfe7-41aa-ab82-0d6bd0169adc/content/figpg219_3.tif"/> https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003267447/178637b7-cfe7-41aa-ab82-0d6bd0169adc/content/figpg220_1.tif"/> https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003267447/178637b7-cfe7-41aa-ab82-0d6bd0169adc/content/figpg220_2.tif"/> https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003267447/178637b7-cfe7-41aa-ab82-0d6bd0169adc/content/figpg220_3.tif"/> 220
