ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an outline of the theoretical underpinnings of arts-based research and then presents artwork based on the data collected from British Chinese children. Radio drama scripts and recordings and comics created in collaboration with professional artists in an attempt to move beyond a one-dimensional level of communication are examined alongside the latest research developments in arts-based research. The artwork specifically captured the British Chinese children’s voices and distilled them into quintessential conflict in the stories, which invites readers to imagine resolutions to the dilemmas present in these children’s lives. Drawing on behind-the-scenes work including the creative process, output and research data generated from the artwork, this chapter provides implications of the significance of methodological and ethical concerns and discusses the potential for public engagement and the potential influence of arts-based research.
