ABSTRACT

The Shingo Institute has chosen a system “map” as the format to be used by system designers. The system map is the final product of the design work. A system map is a visual representation of a system. A system map includes the five required communication tools (standard work, reports, schedule, feedback, and improvement log), two results (key performance indicators and key Behavioral Indicators), and other needed components, such as system name, system leader, system aim, and system members. System maps are used for the following purposes: identifying the components of a system, organizing the components with focus on the five required communication tools, and identifying system members. The beauty and magic of system maps is that they are able to work equally well in very diverse areas. Formalizing systems by using the Shingo system maps improves system stability, connections, collaboration, communication, and supports consistency.
