ABSTRACT

Work systems can often be found on an organizational chart because they are functional units like shipping, production, and accounting. The work system map is the tool provided by the Shingo Institute to define the system components and to spark the discussions necessary to move from informal, casual systems to formal, stable systems. A work system is generally determined by the number of people who can be led by one supervisor, manager, or team leader. A system, as defined by the Shingo Institute, includes the people who work together toward a common aim using the five communication tools and having key performance indicators and key behavioral indicators as measured outcomes. Feedback occurs when someone communicates with the system team members to review the work of the system. Personal feedback is an opportunity to build relationships through discussion focused on the work. The schedule section on the work system map refers specifically to the schedule of feedback.
