ABSTRACT

This first chapter covers the theory and concepts the book uses to critically examine REDD+ anti-deforestation efforts in Indonesia. It reviews the origins of, and literature on, REDD+, before explaining why political ecology is useful to understand its trans-local impacts at various scales in Indonesia and beyond. The chapter then outlines the author’s policy-oriented and scholarly motivations for researching REDD+ through the lens of political ecology, covering the conceptual narratives that provide a focus for the book’s empirical analysis.
