ABSTRACT

The third chapter explains how REDD+ anti-deforestation efforts met the political-economic realities of Indonesia in the decade from 2010. It covers the different approaches taken to REDD+ by the presidential administrations of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo. The chapter goes on to show how several spin-off initiatives with uncertain impacts emerged in parallel to REDD+ in the areas of land tenure, forest governance, and anti-deforestation. It concludes by reviewing the national primary forest loss data for Indonesia during the period of REDD+ implementation and reflects on the narrative that the post-2017 dip in forest loss is connected to REDD+ activities.
