ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the observation that Egypt’s external alignments have diversified since 2013 is substantiated and refined. In order to identify developments and trends and to disclose changes and continuities, selected quantitative data on Egypt’s foreign economic (trade, investments, grants, loans) as well as security relations (arms imports, military trainings) are presented. In this way, the chapter provides a broad general overview of Egypt’s external alignments, setting the scene for the chapters that follow. Overall, the analyzed indicators suggest that Egypt’s external alignments have indeed diversified. The EU has remained Egypt’s prime economic partner, but China and the Gulf states have also played an increasingly important role. Regarding security cooperation, the US has lost its dominant position, while cooperation with European states, Russia, and the UAE has been stepped up substantially.
