ABSTRACT

In today's world, change is the new normal and only constant. With change, conflict is guaranteed to follow in some form or fashion as the operating norm is disrupted. A conflict is, ‘the opposition of persons or forces that give rise to dramatic action.’ The desired end to conflict is finding some form of resolution. The first level of conflict resolution relates to interpersonal conflict. This level can be as simple as two individuals who disagree on a topic or present a formal grievance to leadership over a dispute. The next level is departmental conflict. This typically occurs when the conflict affects a department consisting of a group of people. An organization has three conflicts to address. These challenges consist of an employee grievance, new market competitor threatening its service area and merger with a larger organization creating conflict between program leaders. The final key to successful conflict resolution, for leaders, is to understand, grasp and effectively leverage various roles.
