ABSTRACT

Since the management ideas and the mechanism of SBM are contrastingly different from those of the traditional external control management, there is an urgent need to rethink school leadership for leading and practicing this new mechanism. In the light of new developments in SBM and leadership theory, the chapter aims to provide a new conception of school leadership in terms of multi-dimensional leadership, layer leadership and strategic leadership. In addition, the nine models of school effectiveness provide a full spectrum of leadership models to understand leadership roles and related management approaches. To different models, the role of school leadership may be different, including goal developer, process engineer, operation supervisor, resources developer, social leader and satisfier, accountability builder, triplization initiator, CMI facilitator, and organizational developer.
