ABSTRACT

This chapter tells the story of Kun-bzan, born in 1957, who was training as a nurse when she was recruited to a climbing team. She became a member of the 1975 Everest attempt that saw Phun-rdo become the first Tibetan woman to reach the summit, but she herself suffered an injury and was unlucky enough to not complete that climb. Returning to the profession of nursing, she was again approached and recruited a couple of years later. After several years of intense training and competition, in 1990, she succeeded in scaling Mt Everest, becoming the second Tibetan woman, and ninth woman overall, to achieve that honour.
