ABSTRACT

The “Conclusion” chapter illuminates and reaffirms the trends of the Australian adaptations of Shakespeare for children and Young Adults and the connections with the broader international scene. It argues that they are innovative and engaging because of their approach to historical fiction and the interest in connecting Shakespearean stories to the lives of their readers. However, they also maintain conservative and didactic approaches that direct the readership towards particular ways of interpreting the original Shakespearean story and how that might teach moral lessons or shape a world view. This chapter identifies how adaptations simultaneously dismantle and uphold Shakespearean stories as they ascribe aesthetic and cultural values onto the future generation.
