ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 provides analyses of the results of qualitative and quantitative research. Since there are three types of samples in this research, namely students, parents and teachers, three types of questionnaires are designed correspondingly. Each questionnaire includes three parts: questions seeking basic information about the samples, core questions and questions aimed at gaining an understanding of the basic attitudes of the respondents. The statistics and analysis of the survey results from the three sample groups are given in the text. The qualitative part of the research brings probably the most interesting information. These are interviews with students, parents, teachers and monks. The students who were interviewed were recruited from general lower and upper secondary schools. The parent interviewees were recruited from among the respondents to the questionnaire. The teachers who were interviewed were recruited from among those teachers at general schools and special education schools who participated in the questionnaire survey. Monks are the recipients of Tibetan traditional education. Their understanding of monastic education and their attitude towards school education will be insightful for this study. The monks were interviewed concerning two dimensions: “awareness of their learning” and “attitude towards monastic education and school education”.
