ABSTRACT

In recent history, there has been a strong separation between learning in school settings and pursuing a career after completing one’s education. In spite of the fact that learning continues throughout a person’s lifetime, education in modern times has been associated with formal programs in schools and colleges, and work has been associated with what one does after completing an education. In former times, and especially in Europe, there were two tracks in higher education— one aimed at vocational and technical training, and one aimed at scholarship in the arts and sciences. The global knowledge economy is a widely recognized development and has been characterized in a number of ways. Progressive enterprises encourage their workers to take distance courses during working hours. There are a variety of ways that various enterprises accomplish workplace-based training and education.
