ABSTRACT

The point for educational technologists and instructional designers is that the context of use strongly influences how individuals interpret experience and construct meaning. This chapter presents a brief overview of a representative concern of the foundation areas for major educational settings. Primary and secondary education obviously involves children and adolescents who are developing physically, psychologically, emotionally, and socially. Learning and instruction in K–12 settings typically occur within the context of standard curricula that are aligned with sets of standards developed by those outside the school setting. Tertiary education includes postsecondary contexts such as community, technical, and vocational colleges, as well as universities and graduate institutes. Higher education institutions are places where students can explore a variety of academic and nonacademic pursuits, and this is generally encouraged.
