ABSTRACT

Many of the challenges of bringing a promising demonstration project to scale occur in other disciplines as well as in the field of educational technology. Scaling up involves taking a project designed for a particular setting and implementing it in a much wider range of situations. Within the context of formal education, taking a project to scale can mean taking what worked with one subject area at one grade level to other subject levels and grade levels within the same school. Scalability can be defined as the effort required to take a project implemented at one level to a higher level. Evidence suggests that as the scale of an effort increases, the involvement of users becomes increasingly important. Evidence-based decision-making before, during, and subsequent to an educational technology innovation is a critical factor, especially when scaling up.
