ABSTRACT

One common representation of changes in education technologies is that devices are getting smaller, more powerful, and less expensive. Two early developments have impacted educational technologies significantly over the years. The first and most obvious change involves the connectedness of our devices to local and wide area networks and especially to the internet. The nature of interacting with technology-based resources has changed dramatically thanks to such technologies as virtual, augmented, and mixed realities. Using technology-based games to promote learning even in complex problem-solving domains has become commonplace. Historically, when a new educational technology has emerged, many educational technologists have overpromised what impact that technology would have on learning, often promising that a particular technology would transform education, disrupt traditional practice, and have remarkable improvements in learning outcomes.
