ABSTRACT

The teacher is the voice that encourages, the ear that listens, the eye that reflects, the hand that guides, the face that does not turn away. Typically, teaching is associated with school-based learning and formal curricula, whereas training is often associated with focused learning for adults pursuing professional recognition or certification. With regard to teaching children, there are certainly developmental considerations that should be taken into account. The competencies required of a trainer are very similar to those required of a teacher, as suggested by IBSTPI. Andragogy is a theory for adult learning popularized by Malcolm Knowles, a key figure in the adult education movement. Adults often bring to a learning situation a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences with the expectation that some of them will be acknowledged and useful when learning something new.
