ABSTRACT

Much has been written about our post truth era of fake news and alternative facts; how destabilising it is when untruths swirl everywhere; when nothing seems certain. Having a Liar in Chief in the Whitehouse has been deeply disconcerting. But Trump was a johnny-come-lately; the corporate advertiser was ahead of him by the best part of a century. The ex-president is surely a bare-faced liar of the worst sort, but it took the corporation, with all its resources and psychopathic determination, to turn lying into a career option – a profession with its own curriculum laid down in learned textbooks and taught in business schools; its own justifications; its own self-serving rewards.

Welcome to the world of organised lying.
