ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the scope and trends in digital work done by women comedians in the US, based on data collected on 100 women comedians, including their followings on TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and whether or not they host a podcast. This chapter applies Marxist scholarly critiques to argue that the adverse effects of digital media work are less impactful than its liberating potential for their careers. Among the many benefits, women comedians gain opportunities to create new comedy forms, engage with fans, enjoy autonomy and working communities, express themselves politically, transition to traditional mass media work, and shape own their critical reputations.
