ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the degree to which Netflix takes risks in producing women comedians' first stand-up specials, adding to their prestige, and helping develop their reputations. This chapter also examines how Netflix uses digital platforms to manage the risks of their lacking reputations and sometimes niche comedy. Case studies include Iliza Shlesinger, who was mainly known through Instagram, Natalie Palamides, who performs an avant-garde comedy-of-consent, and Ms. Pat, who voices an underrepresented socioeconomic Black experience.
