ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the way former president Donald J. Trump used comedy to wage a war with women satirists who mock him and his administration, including Michelle Wolf, Samantha Bee, and the women of Saturday Night Live, Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon. This chapter explains Trump's antagonism toward them and its effect on increasing the carnivalesque nature of their television satire. When these women comedians matched Trump's own comic methods in innovate ways, they gained media traction and significant online redistribution through Twitter and YouTube.
