ABSTRACT

This chapter examines video podcasting by women comedians on YouTube, examining how they manufacture perceived authenticity and cultivate fans through a complex range of choices in topics, sets, costumes, performance, structure, guests, and jokes. This chapter suggests that Sarah Silverman, Ms. Pat, Whitney Cummings, Annie Lederman, Esther Povitsky, and Christina Pazsitzky are capitalizing on the neoliberal marketplace through their video podcasting, using YouTube to be creative, develop their reputations, and create collaborative communities.
