ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ways women comedians use Instagram. This includes the way Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Nikki Glaser, Amy Schumer, and Chelsea Handler all work within the materialistic ideology of Instagram to promote themselves and shape their reputations with their fans. At the same time, this study demonstrates the way women comedians can create subversive comic images which challenge that ideology, and generate substantial press coverage off the platform.
