ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the work of women comedy creators on YouTube, including Jenna Marbles, Lilly Singh, Colleen Ballinger, Issa Rae, Ilana Glazer, and Abbi Jacobson. This chapter explains their strategies for producing popular content on YouTube, developing their own comic forms and shaping their reputations with fans. This chapter also demonstrates a significant disparity. Among these women, those who work autonomously, enjoying self-expression and working in a less televisual way, find it more difficult to transition to careers in network or cable television, instead working for Netflix, and even in Broadway theatre.
