ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Hezbollah's military and political maneuvers in the Lebanese theater. It backtracks a little to Hezbollah's first participation in the Lebanese political system by running for the parliamentary elections in 1992. It then moves to scrutinizing the period stretching from 2004–2005, marked by the withdrawal of the Syrian army from Lebanon, to the 17 October Uprising in 2019 and Hezbollah's response to these events. Throughout these years, Hezbollah consolidated its grip over Lebanon on both military and political levels, and built cross-sectarian alliances which helped increase its domestic influence. While Hezbollah reached its apogee after its win in the 2018 parliamentary elections, the 17 October Uprising has been a challenge that continues to the day of writing not only for Hezbollah but also for all Lebanese political elites.
