ABSTRACT

The coronavirus has significantly impacted Maghreb economies struggling with severe economic strain, political instability, and conflict. Although the Maghreb case numbers and death toll remain low, COVID-19 threatens economic and political stability in the region. This chapter discusses China’s relationships with the Maghreb countries during the COVID-19 pandemic and how it affects the realization of PRC’s new Silk Road grand strategy. As North African countries grapple with fiscal constraints as part of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is yet to be seen whether Beijing’s ambitions and relationship within the Maghreb region will continue to develop at the same pace in the future.
