ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the research conclusions regarding PRC’s relationship with the Maghreb countries based on the new Silk Road grand strategy and their implications for the region’s West goals. The Maghreb region has an integral role in the realization of the BRI grand strategy. The partnerships between PRC and the Maghreb countries help China effectively manage and control its energy, goods, or product needs and open new markets and trade routes. PRC has been mostly successful in employing strategic partnerships or relationships as a prominent instrument in its limited diplomatic toolkit to guarantee integration between local countries’ needs and the BRI vision. However, the successful implementation of the BRI grand strategy in the Maghreb region is challenging other traditional external actors’ strategic interests, namely the US and Europe. PRC’s introducing a degree of multi-polarity in the area provides local players with a new set of bargaining tools in their relationship with Western countries. This could impact the regional balance of powers and stability of the region, with far-reaching consequences on European interests in the long run. PRC’s new Silk Road grand strategy in the Maghreb region will only continue to expand, especially in the economic sphere.
