ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses PRC’s relationship with Mauritania as an instrument for realizing its BRI grand strategy. It explores the synergies between the new Silk Road grand strategy and the Mauritanian economic development process. The main argument is that Beijing’s BRI grand strategy and the relationship with Mauritania has a key role in fulfilling the Chinese Dream and cementing the CPC leadership. There is a direct connection between PRC’s relationship with the North African country and the new Silk Road grand strategy. Therefore, the key to understanding China’s upgraded involvement in Mauritania must be in the context of the BRI framework. The new Silk Road grand strategy is an essential guide for China-Mauritania’s relationship. China’s relationship with Mauritania within the new Silk Road grand strategy includes three primary objectives: Policy coordination, enhancement of trade, and facilities connectivity.
