ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 considers the case for a revised form of impeachment by taking into account the counter-arguments against impeachment, before seeking to address these criticisms within the literature and arising from interviews undertaken as part of research. This chapter aims to address the possibility whether impeachment can be reinvigorated within the United Kingdom. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a balanced and independent examination of the argument that a new impeachment procedure would buttress the existing political accountability mechanisms at Westminster. Chapter 7 considered the rationale and justification for impeachment, which was made within the context of the political constitution and ensuring executive accountability. This chapter will consider the perceived obstacles to impeachment, in the former of counter-arguments, before addressing these and proposing ways in which these counter-arguments can, if possible, be overcome.
