ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the period from 1915 to 1945. It discusses the demise of the Liberal State, the rise of Social Democracy, the Russian Revolution, the developments of authoritarian States in Europe, and how these developments changed the relationship between the State and the economy. It discusses how cooperatives fared in authoritarian states. It highlights key cooperative-related events such as the role of the Swedish cooperative movement in reducing the power of monopolies, the development of cooperative banking in North America, the role of the State during the New Deal in promoting agricultural and electric cooperatives. It also notes the role of the International Cooperative Alliance during the inter-war period and the debate on the role of cooperatives in the economy.
