ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 focusses on the creative potential of the interaction of language varieties in these texts. It explores how this dialogical interrelation is emphasised by the structural compression of these poems. Ultimately, this chapter suggests that these translations can be thought of as palimpsests, that is, texts where traces of other languages, eras, cultures and texts can be found, a testament to cultural riches and the hidden wealth of our shared language. The layering of language varieties in these translations allows multiple worlds to converge in the same text, and can be viewed as enhancing and enriching, for these texts and for the individual lexicons of these poets.
