ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the nature of academic speaking and listening on an MA TESOL/Applied Linguistics and highlights some of the different contexts that are likely to be encountered. It begins by discussing spoken interactions with academic staff and makes some suggestions for how these should best be approached. It then considers the nature of oral interactions involved in group work and peer learning before focusing in some detail on the specific academic skill of how to give effective oral presentations. The second half of the chapter turns its attention to academic listening and provides some tips on how to get the most from lectures and seminars.
