ABSTRACT
This chapter puts the proposition that the rise of democracy has been built upon a wider set of socio-economic circumstances and that these circumstances have either fundamentally altered or have begun to disappear. It also acknowledges that economic circumstances do not structurally determine political outcomes. They do, however, create a context for those political outcomes.
