ABSTRACT
The progress made by trade unionism towards acceptance can be most clearly documented in the pages of the weekly and daily press. Here one can see attitudes perceptibly changing from unremitting and violent hostility in the early 1850s, through rather grudging approval of some of their activities and the feeling that there was, perhaps, much to be said on both sides of any dispute, to a guarded acceptance that unions were not unvaluable institutions.
