ABSTRACT
This chapter elaborates on the layers of hermeneutics and deconstruction in Kimmerle’s thinking. Thus far, the way the study of Schleiermacher’s hermeneutics influenced Kimmerle’s approach to intercultural philosophy has not been explored, and it is argued that Schleiermacher influenced Kimmerle’s intercultural philosophy in various ways. Therefore, it juxtaposes Schleiermacher’s position with Hegel’s position and compares Kimmerle’s interpretation of Schleiermacher with Gadamer’s interpretation. It discusses the relation between speaking and listening and the possibility of translation. This chapter also discusses an unpublished text about translation that Kimmerle presented at a conference the year before he passed away. It is explored how this text relates to his approach to intercultural philosophy.
