ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on SA as the main framework to analyse the conflictive settings between the stakeholders. SA is a holistic approach to gain a better understanding of a system characterized by different interests, multiple stakeholders and their objectives and influences. The theoretical framework both identifies different groups of actors affected by environmental, political and socio-economic change and describes how these actors contribute to these changes themselves. Because environmental politics and natural resource governance typically deal with multiple stakeholders and often conflictual interests, SA is a useful framework to discuss the interrelationship between natural resources, water shortages and conflict dynamics.
