ABSTRACT

This chapter covers unhelpful beliefs about the relationship between appearance and identity, identifying who the reader admires, what specific attributes about that individual are aspirational, and how to develop a sense of identity outside of physical appearance. This chapter opens with an explanation of “unhelpful beliefs,” with relatable examples; readers are guided through the practice of thought reframing using the “ABC” model: Activating event, Belief, Consequence, Disputing evidence, and Effective new belief. Thorough examples are provided to help readers effectively reframe their own unhelpful beliefs in the activities at the end, which include a thought reframing exercise as well as an identity exercise.
