ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the steps toward releasing the enslaving emphasis of body obsession. The chapter begins by discussing all the freedoms gained by letting go of body manipulation, emphasizing that feelings and thoughts toward the body are radically transformed when unconditional permission to eat and respect for the body are extended. The chapter explains how to redirect away from negativity and toward neutrality in order to introduce interventions for preventing body checking. This chapter’s activities include creating a neutrality resource and a list-making prompt. The neutrality resource is called “5-4-3-2-1,” as it includes writing five neutral affirmations, four coping skills to use in the interventions described previously in the chapter, three motivators for pursuing body neutrality, two people who can offer support when the reader is struggling, and one piece of advice for the reader to use on a daily basis. The second activity is a list-making prompt encouraging readers to identify every sacrifice necessary for maintaining body obsession, and everything that the reader hopes to enjoy in the freedom provided by body neutrality.
