ABSTRACT
Statements of suspects must be voluntary and must be made after Miranda warnings are given. Local jurisdictions may specify additional actions. Persons questioned must be in custody. Interrogation may include any words or actions designed to elicit an incriminating response. Miranda warnings do not have to be given to witnesses or to persons stopped for routine traffic offenses. The warnings require specific statements, which should be memorized. Juvenile questioning has additional requirements. If answers are refused, or if a suspect is intoxicated, hysterical, or injured, stop questioning.
