ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the development of children’s divergent thinking as well as how one can foster curiosity and imagination to ensure that children develop many of the skills vital for creative thinking. It looks at 2- and 3-year-olds, typically referred to as toddlers in early years settings. The book then follows a similar course with children from the age of 3 and typically attending pre-schools. It also looks at the relationships that are formed with children in the years following their second birthday and how practitioners can ensure they are respectful and acknowledge the growing personality and needs of the child. The book focuses on the environment that is required to foster and encourage creativity and explores some of the ways practitioners can reflect on what they offer and ensure it continually meets the needs of the children.
