ABSTRACT

Physical development is the cornerstone of being able to do things independently and having the confidence to do so and ask for help if they need it. Without strong muscles, children can find some of the most basis physical tasks a challenge, and this is becoming more apparent in their early years settings. In this chapter, the author shares some of her favourite ideas to engage children, some that produce beautiful pieces but still keeping the process at the heart. For those who don’t know, Hapa Zome, also known as flower bashing, is a great way to strengthen muscles, make beautiful artwork and aid children’s gross motor skills. It is an art form originating in Japan and involves smashing flowers into fabrics, creating a print. Children love to create, and these bits ‘n’ bob masterpieces provide the perfect way for children to choose their own resources with no pre-conceived ideas from practitioners.
